People & Lifestyle

Paia and the North Shore combine a funky counter-culture vibe with access to some of the finest beaches on the planet. Paia also boasts some of Maui’s best shopping and restaurants. Other nearby North Shore communities tend to be quieter, though they are still within easy reach of Paia’s amenities.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Paia is considered by many to be the unofficial world capital of windsurfing, and this small town is teeming with cool cosmopolitan businesses. Mama’s Fish House is probably the most lauded restaurant in all of Hawaii. Ranked among the United States’ best fine dining establishments by TripAdvisor and the nation’s most popular restaurants by OpenTable, Mama’s combines the freshest seafood with outstanding service and a blissful tropical setting to create a dining experience that Zagat calls “unforgettable”. Amid the Old West storefronts of Paia’s laidback downtown, you’ll discover trendy boutiques, art galleries, and other eclectic businesses. Mana Foods is arguably the island’s best natural foods store, offering a great selection of local produce and ready-to-eat foodstuffs. Other retailers in Paia include Nuage Bleu for brand-name apparel, Imrie for stylish beachwear and streetwear, and Biasa Rose for high-quality womenswear, kids’ clothing, accessories, and home décor items. Maui Hands Art Gallery is packed from floor-to-ceiling with unique locally-produced artwork. Flatbread Company uses organic wheat, free-range meat, and fresh local produce for its signature wood-fired flatbreads and tasty salads. Dining choices in Paia include chef-driven Japanese and Hawaiian fusion dishes at the Paia Inn’s Vana restaurant. Vana’s menu features outstanding sushi and sashimi and boasts an impressive wine list alongside craft cocktails, artisanal beers, and premium imported sake. While Paia’s hip businesses are a draw in their own right, the main attraction is undoubtedly the town’s spectacular beaches and surf breaks. Ho’okipa Beach Park’s curving sands and strong currents provide the stage for the world’s best windsurfers to master their craft. The conditions are almost always perfect for experienced windsurfers, and pro competitions are held at Ho’okipa throughout the year. Another landmark of Paia’s scenic shoreline is Peahi, which is famed among surfers around the world for its dramatic waves. Peahi’s spectacular Jaws surf break can produce waves as tall as 60 feet high and is regularly featured among nominations for the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave Surfing Award.

Things to Do

Maui has a rich heritage of Japanese immigration, and each summer the Japanese Buddhist tradition of Obon is celebrated across the island. The Paia Rinzai Zen Mission’s Obon Festival in August is a colorful event with dancing and lanterns. Paia’s annual events also include some of the world’s premier windsurfing and surfing competitions. The Maui Aloha Classic is the final stop of the International Windsurfing Tour. Held in late October or early November on Ho’okipa Beach, the Aloha Classic is considered to be the most prestigious windsurfing contest in the world. Held on Peahi’s famous Jaws surf break, December’s Jaws Big Wave Championship is equally important to big wave surfing. Recreational amenities in Paia also include Maui Country Club, where members enjoy access to a 9-hole golf course, six USTA-certified tennis courts, and first-class swimming and fitness facilities.
